Wisdom and Kindness
Heart Prep
Lord, help me to speak words of wisdom and kindness to those around me.
Proverbs 31: 26 "She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”
Today's verse is from the description of the Proverbs 31 woman. This passage of Scripture is often used on Mother's Day to describe a godly woman and is used in many devotionals as the standard for which we must strive. Today, let's focus on verse 26, in which the keywords are “wisdom” and “kindness”. I would love to be described as wise and kind, but sometimes careless and rude would be better descriptors. It is important, as a daughter of God, to speak wisdom and kindness into the lives of others (and to ourselves).
Wisdom doesn’t just happen, though, we must ask God for wisdom. God provides it to us through the Bible, through prayer, through life lessons, and also through wise people in our lives. It is important to seek out mentors and older women who have more life experience to help supply wisdom in our lives. They are able to help us to navigate the confusing and sometimes rough waters of life.
Additionally, kindness should overflow from our mouths because of God’s kindness to us. I sometimes find myself being judgmental, snippy, and rude, and I have to ask God (and others) for forgiveness for my unkind words. Instead of speaking ugly words, try to focus today on building others up and being kind to others even when you don’t feel like it. Ask God to give you the strength, guidance, and self-control to show wisdom and kindness to the people in your life today.
